Young plays Vivian Miller, a young woman in her 20s who is in jail for a crime she didn't commit. She's in a work release program in the Midwest, and she's afraid. It's Lawrence O'Neil who runs the Cawdor Theater, which is a run-down summer stock theater that's been around for a long time. Her 90 days of probation are spent there (Elwes). As a Broadway director who didn't work out, Lawrence now has to stage amateur shows with young parolees and rage over the mistakes of his youth while he thinks about them. A terrifying chain of events starts when Vivian arrives in Cawdor. This brings Lawrence's secret past into the present, which is very scary. She sees a tape of an old Macbeth play, and after she does, she becomes the target of a force of evil that soon aims its wrath at her. It helps if Vivian gets help from Roddy (Welch), a local outcast. Vivian is trying to figure out who on the tape is killing people with supernatural powers before becoming the next one.
