Hillary Burns, a woman in her thirties, has spent her entire life attempting to get the approval of her parents, particularly her critical mother, Meredith Burns, without success. Hillary's quest for approval requires her to marry the perfect man. Hillary is ecstatic to be engaged to the successful attorney Jason King, whom she will introduce to her family for the first time during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend in one week. Hillary's life begins to fall apart, however, when she simultaneously loses her part-time newspaper writing job when the newspaper folds and her boyfriend Jason dumps her to focus on his work, which appears to be more important to him than Hillary.
