As the number of athletic young men in the United States dwindles during World War II, a professional all-female baseball league is founded in the Midwest, financed by the publicity-hungry candy manufacturer Walter Harvey (Garry Marshall). On their journey to stardom, competitive sisters Dottie Hinson (Geena Davis) and Kit Keller (Lori Petty) spar with one another, scout Ernie Capadino (Jon Lovitz), and jaded former coach Jimmy Dugan (Tom Hanks). Madonna and Rosie O'Donnell play two of the sisters' teammates in a co-starring role.
