After seeing Esther Hoffman play at a club, a drunken, has-been rock musician named John Norman Howard falls in love with her. He allows her to perform a few songs at one of his gigs, and she quickly becomes the talk of the business. John's star continues to fall, while Esther's begins to soar. She tries everything she can to get John to stop drinking and concentrate on his music, but it may be too late.
