The week is spent by a New York City professor (Justin Long) bonding with his family while also defending his reputation as a result of contentious behavior at his college. The rest of the family is resolved to assist their matriarch, Agatha (Lynn Cohen), who has been admitted to New York's Presbyterian Hospital and will most likely die within a few days if they don't get their act together. No one is dealing with this especially well, and to make matters worse, each family member is dealing with their own set of issues at the same time. In the absence of her mother, Diane (Fran Drescher) is completely unprepared for life on her own, and, in an unexpected turn of events, she ends up seeking consolation in an unlikely place... her ex-husband.
