Paul Baumer is a young German patriot who is ready to battle when the war begins. After years of being brainwashed by the government's propaganda at school, he and his buddies decide to join the military as soon as they can. With his buddies dying or being severely injured as a result of the violence of war, Paul begins to question the wisdom of fighting for the small area in which they are engaged.
