Zack Mayo is an unapproachable, reticent man who desires to become a navy pilot. When Mayo arrives at training camp for his 13-week officer's course, he encounters the harsh, no-nonsense drill Sergeant Emil Foley. Mayo is a great cadet, but a bit heartless, so Foley rides him relentlessly, recognizing that the young man would be prime officer potential if he weren't so self-centered. Zack's relationship with a working girl is similarly hampered by his reluctance to give of himself.
