At the conclusion of World War II, a National Guard infantry company is tasked with establishing artillery observation posts in a strategic location. The fact that Lt. Costa (Jack Palance) is in command solely as a result of the "connections" he developed while in the United States is known to Capt. Cooney (Eddie Albert).
