Dougie Waters enjoys nothing more than getting together with his friends for a barbeque and a cricket game on the weekend. He is forced to leave his paradise on earth when his best friend and neighbour Norm is forced to leave town and their new employer, a pompous English administrator named Edward Lords, moves into the house where he has been living. The hostility between the two men reaches a boiling point during a disastrous backyard cricket play when Dougie accidently stuns Edward's prize-winning cat, Dexter, with a cricket ball he smashes. As soon as the cat falls into the blazing BBQ, it is instantaneously burned, leaving just ashes behind. A video of the terrible event is captured on camera by Dougie's son, and the film is uploaded to YouTube, where it immediately becomes viral! The concept of a backyard cricketing competition is conceived, with the prize being the winning team's possession of the ashes of Edward's deceased cat, Dexter. The Backyard Ashes are on the line as the two teams compete in the greatest game of backyard cricket ever played.
