The WTO Ministerial Conference of 1999 is held in Seattle, Washington. Tens of thousands of activists show up to protest (World Trade Organization). Even though it started out as a peaceful protest to stop the WTO talks, it turned into a full-scale riot and then a State of Emergency, which put protesters against the Seattle Police Department and the National Guard.
