After killing a prison guard, Robert Stroud will spend his whole life in solitary confinement. Stroud's life takes on a new meaning when he finds a sick baby sparrow in the exercise yard and cares for it until it's healthy again. Even though Stroud only finished the third grade, he goes on to become a famous ornithologist and finds more freedom and purpose in prison than most people do in the outside world.
