In the 1930s, two warring commanders meet on the Arabian Peninsula. Nesib, the Emir of Hobeika, makes peace with his rival, Amar, the Sultan of Salmaah. The two men agree that neither can claim The Yellow Belt, which is a piece of land between them that neither can claim. As a guarantee against invasion, Nesib takes Amar's two boys, Saleeh and Auda, into his family. Twelve years have gone by, and now Saleeh and Auda are young men. Saleeh, the warrior, wants to get out of his golden cage and go back to the land of his father. Auda only cares about books and learning new things. One day, an American from Texas comes to see their adopted father, Nesib. He tells the Emir that his land is blessed with oil and that he will be richer than he could ever imagine. Nesib imagines a kingdom with roads, schools, and hospitals that are all paid for by the black gold that lies under the desert sand. Only one thing goes wrong. The Yellow Belt is where you can find the valuable oil.
