The film is based on the true life experiences of poet Jimmy Santiago Baca and centers on half-brothers Paco and Cruz, as well as their bi-racial cousin Miklo. Miklo is imprisoned and transferred to San Quentin, where he creates a "home" for himself. Cruz develops into an exceptional artist, but a heroin addiction consumes him, with tragic consequences.
