Sally Hyde (Jane Fonda), the wife of a Marine serving in Vietnam, decides to volunteer at a local veterans hospital to fill her time. There she meets Luke Martin (Jon Voight), a disillusioned wheelchair-bound veteran. Sally and Luke form a friendship that quickly blossoms into a romance, but when her husband, Bob (Bruce Dern), unexpectedly returns, she must choose between staying with him and pursuing her new love.
