Correspondences
Jorge de Sena was compelled to flee the land in which he was born. He first relocated to Brazil, and then to the United States. He did not return to Portugal after that. His exile lasted 20 years, during which time he maintained an epistolary connection with Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen. A testament to the deep relationship that existed between the two poets, these letters are also expressions of yearning to "replace years of distance with hours of conversation," as one poet put it. An intertextual dialogue is constructed through a series of excerpts and verses, exposing their differing viewpoints but most importantly their strong link, and their efforts to keep it alive until their last breaths.
