Karel Vojtisek, a talented young flier, is assigned to Lt. Franta Slama, a top pilot in the Czech Air Force. Both reject the authority of their new rulers and flee to England to join other Czech refugees in the RAF when Nazi Germany invades in 1939. Karel crashes-lands over England and finds Susan's farmhouse, a young woman whose husband is in the Navy. Even though Karel is smitten with Susan, Susan prefers the company of the wiser and more worldly Franta. Despite their romantic rivalry, Franta and Karel try to keep their friendship.
