The situation in Herb's life is dire. The man has lost his social security, is unable to find work, is unable to communicate with his kid, has a neighbor who won't shut talking, and lives off of cheap beer and mushy peas for his meals. He realizes it's a bad way to live. This revelation comes after seeing an interview with a Danish prisoner on television, who has access to an HDTV as well as an on-call doctor and a steady employment. They're basically living in hotels. He bids farewell to his shabby apartment and boards a cargo ship bound for Denmark, where he alights in a sleepy port town where he finds everything he needs, including a bank that he intends to mug. In prison, he begins to question whether or not prison is really his only option for a happy life, until he meets a kind local barmaid and a devoted stray dog.
