After being widowed, Frank Fogle reluctantly goes on a journey to fulfill his wife's final desire of scattering her ashes in a lonely lake in her native Ireland, with the promise of accompanying his estranged son, Sean. Sean's first thought upon his release from prison is not of a foreign road trip with his estranged father. What he requires is a new beginning in California. However, when his vacation plans fall through, he reluctantly accepts his father's proposal in exchange for a ticket to the West Coast and the assurance that they will never have to see each other again. Between a strange Irish wake, the reappearance of an old flame, the pick-up of a lovely hitchhiker, and an abundance of unsolved issues, the voyage becomes more than father and son planned for.
