The emperor of the Jurchen Jin Dynasty, Wanyan Liang, intended to invade the Southern Song Dynasty in 1161. People in the Central Plain had a tough time making ends meet because of the ruthless Jin and their rigorous recruitment strategy. At the age of21, Xin Qiji led a group of villagers in an uprising against the Jin army. Later, he joined a more powerful voluntary army led by Geng Jing, and together they won victory after triumph. Xin Qiji traveled to the south in 1162 to convince the Song Emperor to evict the Jurchens from the north in order to restore the lost area and realize the reunification. After completing his duty, Xin Qiji discovered that commander Geng Jing had been murdered by a traitor and that the morale of the troops had plummeted.
