Fortune Favors Lady Nikuko
In an otherwise tranquil beach village in northern Japan, Nikuko is a boisterous, jovial, scattered, and passionate lady. Additionally, she is the sole parent to 11-year-old Kikuko, who contrasts her in many ways. Kikuko is a string-bean-sized young lady who lives in this sleepy coastal town methodically and with a sense of melancholy. As any parent of a preteen would, Nikuko embarrasses Kikuko, but in a community where Kikuko herself would rather nothing more than to fit in, Nikuko's outspoken personality makes her particularly well-known. A startling revelation from the past poses a threat to the pair's delicate connection as Kikuko navigates the common social dramas of middle school, supplemented with bits of magical realism from her ever-present imagination.
