In the aftermath of a forgery conviction, Johnny is released from prison and immediately takes a short-order cook position in an uptown diner in Manhattan. Having had a brief romance with waitress Cora, Frankie develops feelings for Cora's buddy, who also happens to be a fellow waitress. While Frankie initially rejects Johnny's advances, she eventually gives in after her best friend, Tim, persuades her to give Johnny a second opportunity.
