An address book killer, Karl is a computer shop technician who collects his victims' names from stolen address books. A salesman uses Terry's contact book to demonstrate a hand-held scanner when Terry and her son Josh come into the store to price software. When Karl gets the file, he accidentally causes his car to go off the road and flip over in a cemetery while traveling to Terry's house that night in a heavy thunderstorm. It appears as though Karl's soul has been turned into electrical energy during his CAT scan at the hospital. Karl continues his murdering spree by exploiting the electrical infrastructure and computer networks.
