When Emily Walters meets Donald Horner, a local recluse in the idyllic Hampstead Village of London, she finds herself in the midst of a quiet, unremarkable existence. In a rickety cottage near the edge of a forest, Donald has been living for the past 17 years, living recklessly but peacefully. Donald and his property are threatened by developers who would stop at nothing to force him out of his house, and saving Donald and his property becomes Emily's personal goal. While Emily is attracted to his gruff exterior and courteous refusals to assist him, he is attracted to Emily, and what begins as a philanthropic cause evolves into a relationship that will grow even as the bulldozers approach in on their home.
