These miners went on strike against the Brookside Mine owned by Eastover Mining in June, 1973. This film shows how the miners walked out. Because Eastover didn't sign a contract when the miners joined the United Mine Workers of America, the strike started. The fights between the miners and the company thugs were very violent. Barbara Kopple, the director of the film, helps us understand the strike by giving us some background on the history of the miners and the history of the UMWA.
