The young Harold lives in a world of suicide attempts and cemetery visits in order to avoid the anguish of his existing family and home situation. On one of his many adventures, Harold encounters Maude, an 80-year-old woman who not only lives in her own universe, but is having the time of her life. After meeting each other, they discover that their differences don't matter, and they go on to become close friends and fall in love with each other all over again.
