The Henderson family's automobile hits an animal in the road while returning from a hunting trip. Inspecting the "corpse", they discover it is a "bigfoot". They carry it home thinking it's dead (there could be some money in this). It's not dead, as you suspected. "Harry" is a kind giant, not a vicious monster.
