Following World War II, a northern cannery corporation negotiates the purchase of a large tract of uncultivated Georgia farmland from a local farmer. The majority of the land is held by Julie Ann Warren, and her unscrupulous, draft-dodging husband, Henry, has already optioned a section of it. It is now necessary for the combine to purchase two smaller plots, one of which is owned by Henry's cousin Rad McDowell, an Army veteran with a wife and children, and the other which is owned by Reeve Scott, a young black man whose mother had been Julie's childhood Mammy. No one, however, is interested in selling, and Rad and Reeve form an extraordinary black and white partnership to enhance their property. Despite his displeasure with the turn of events, Henry is determined to see the large land purchase through.. Moreover, when Reeve's mother Rose passes away, Henry attempts to persuade his wife to file a lawsuit against Reeve for illegal ownership of his land, believing that the biased Judge Purcell will decide in favor of a black man.
