Henri Boulanger is laid off after fifteen years of service. He tries to commit suicide but is unsuccessful, so he hires a contract assassin in a sleazy pub to murder him at an unspecified point in the future. Henri meets and falls in love with Margaret, a flower seller, almost immediately, which makes him realize that his life does have some value after all. But when he returns to the tavern to cancel the contract, he discovers that it has been demolished, and he has no way of contacting the killer...
