Paul (Macfadyen), a war journalist who won an award for his work, comes back to his little birthplace in a rural part of New Zealand after the death of his father. He is battle-scarred and world-weary. Celia (Barclay), who is sixteen years old and unhappy, finds that he introduces her to a world that she had previously only imagined. She is interested in developing a friendship with him because she is intrigued by his pessimism and the fact that he has experienced life outside of her small-town living. However, many people, including members of both of their families (Otto and Moy), disapprove of their friendship, and when Celia goes missing, Paul becomes the leading suspect in her abduction and is subjected to increasing levels of hostility and persecution as a result of this.
