The story is based on an actual incident. On April 27, 1940, Luftwaffe pilot Horst Schopis' Heinkel 111 bomber is shot down near Grotli by an RAF Blackburn Skua L2940 fighter, which then crashes into a field. Schopis is killed. The surviving German and English crew members continue to shoot at one other, but they eventually find themselves huddled together in the same cabin as one another. They will have to work together if they are to survive the severe winter in the Norwegian wilderness. A chance encounter leads to the formation of a lasting friendship.
