Ironweed
New York's Albany is Halloween, 1938. Francis Phelan and Helen Archer are vagrants who have returned to their hometown. He was a major league pitcher and she was a radio vocalist. They are surrounded by death: she is ill, a friend has cancer, he digs graves at the cemetery and visits the grave of his son, whom he abandoned; glimpses of his past, including the ghosts of two men he murdered, torment him. Helen tries to perform at a pub while out drinking that evening. The next day, Fran visits his wife and children, where he meets his grandchild. He could remain, but chose to go. Helen retrieves their belongings and finds a hotel. The film highlights their code of fairness and loyalty amidst their errors and transgressions.
