In order to support himself and his single father, Charley Thompson takes a summer job as a clerical assistant for horse trainer Del Montgomery. After developing a strong bond with an aging racehorse named Lean on Pete, Charley is shocked to find that the horse is destined for slaughter. As a result, he steals the horse, and the two of them set out on an expedition across the new frontier.
