Clark is the only black person in a sea of white people in the summer before 6th grade. To be cool, he learns that he needs to act "more black." Fumbling to meet expectations, Mack and Gina, who live in an urban area, also try to adapt to small-town living. While the close-knit family is prepared for the numerous inherent difficulties of New York, they are unprepared for the drastically different set of obstacles that their new community presents, and quickly find themselves struggling to understand themselves and one another in this new suburban context.
