In Sunray, a sleepy hamlet on Australia's Murray River, the only activities available are fishing and listening to the local radio. Ken Sherry, a mid-40s, aloof, thrice-divorced, hatchet-faced D.J., arrives from the bustle of Brisbane to head the radio station. But both of the sisters next door find him attractive: uncomfortable Dimity, only20, who works in a Chinese restaurant with few customers, and cheerful Vicki-Ann, a hairdresser with a hope chest who imagines a future with Sherry based on little more than his arrival. First Dimity and then Vicki-Ann spend the night with Ken, each concluding that he is her boyfriend and then fiancé, respectively. Then, Dimity detects a fishy odor.
