Wolf businessman Domenico Soriano and seventeen-year-old whore Filumena Marturano meet in a brothel bombed by the Allies during World War II in Naples. Two years later, in the years following the war, they happen to cross paths again and establish a long-lasting relationship. During Domenico's travels, Filumena has been Domenico's mistress and has been running his Naples shops for the past twenty-two years. Filumena seduces Domenico into marrying her as though she were on the verge of death, and he accepts her proposal. Her marriage is annulled and she confesses that she has three sons, one of whom is his biological child but whose identity she keeps a secret. As a middle-aged man, Domenico goes to great lengths to discover which of the many teenagers in his neighborhood could be his son.
