Mary Stuart, the widow of King Francis I of France, traveled back to Scotland in 1561 to regain the crown that was rightfully hers. Because of her lawful claim to the throne of England, her return posed a threat to the future rule of Queen Elizabeth I of England. Mary Stuart died in 1587.
