Mudhoney
Calef is traveling from Michigan to California when he pauses in Spooner, Missouri, where he is hired to do odd jobs by Lute, a character from the Depression-era novel. Calef becomes romantically acquainted with Lute's niece, Hannah. She is, however, married to Sidney, a drinker who beats his wife and expects to inherit his uncle's fortune. A conspiracy between Sidney and an eccentric preacher is hatched against Calef, who is struggling to keep his enigmatic past and growing feelings for Sidney's wife hidden.
