Herbie Melbourne is a pitiful schlemiel who finds himself inadvertently caught between the Devil and the deep blue sea in this German farce about a cab driver assigned to transport a "comrade" back to the East German side of the Berlin wall, a passenger who is permanently dead to the world upon his arrival. The KGB and East German Intelligence engage Herbie the cabbie to assist them in determining who murdered the man in his back seat. Following his arrival on the West German side of the divide, Herbie is recruited as a counterspy by the CIA and West German Intelligence for double what the other side pays him. As Herbie appears to have no feasible path out of this dilemma, he seeks assistance from a therapist. She reaches into her bag of tricks and hands Herbie a small bottle that he can sniff if he lacks confidence, an act that is sure to put him in command of any scenario. Herbie is now a cab driver, a KGB agent, a CIA agent, and a bottle sniffer–and he's in love with his stunning therapist.
