During the Japanese rule of Hong Kong in the 1940s, schoolteacher Fang Lan becomes involved with the local guerilla group Dongjiang. After supporting the organization in rescuing novelist Mao Dun, Fang is recruited by resistance group captain Blackie Lau. Fang's mother offers to be a courier and is arrested. Fang turns to a childhood sweetheart who now works at the Japanese occupation headquarters to help her mother.
