To get Grant Willard's attention, Rick Bowman is a street punk who likes to race cars. For free: Willard bails him out of jail and gives him money to be a stock car driver. Bowman agrees to join the world of "figure eight" racing. There is a king of the figure eight track named Hawk Sidney, who is full of himself and wants to be the best at everything. Jolene, Hawk's friend who is pretty, falls for Bowman's charm. He looks at Ellen McLeod, the wife of champion racer Ed McLeod, and his eyes move to her. His friendships fade as Bowman rises up in the ranks, giving way to an all-out desire to be better than everyone else.
