Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria, the son of Emperor Franz Josef of Austria, is suspected of participating in a tragic suicide pact with his female lover in the Austrian town of Mayerling in 1882. It's possible that the complete narrative will never be revealed because of Imperial cover-ups. This story has been adapted for the screen on various occasions, including in French in 1935 and in English in 1968. Miklos Jancso, a Hungarian director, re-creates such events for his own reasons, following his long-running theme of rejection of paternal authority that he introduced in his previous film. Rudolf is a good-natured pansexual golden kid who cavorts on his rural estate with a slew of beautiful, aristocratic lovers and acquaintances of both sexes in the picture, which contains very little dialogue. He is adamant in his refusal to leave his idyllic kingdom, despite the fact that he has been instructed to do so by the Emperor, his father. In spite of the fact that for a significant portion of the film, attractive young people are seen walking around naked and participating in romantic relations, the atmosphere is one of melancholy rather than of lust.
