Cio-Cio-San, the young Japanese bride of dashing American officer Lieutenant Pinkerton, finds her romantic paradise destroyed when he abandons her soon after their wedding. She holds out hope that he will return one day. Cio-Cio-San and her young boy come across Pinkerton's ship in the harbour three years later. Pinkerton and his American wife Kate have come to take the boy away, to raise him in America, and she is looking forward to his arrival. Cio-Cio-San bids her son farewell before killing herself.
