One cavalry regiment is massacred by the Cheyenne and only two soldiers survive: Honus, an inexperienced private who is devoted to his duty, and Cresta, a young woman who has spent the previous two years living with the Cheyenne and who has developed strong feelings for them rather than for the United States government.
