Successful film director John L. Sullivan, convinced that he will not be able to film his ambitious masterpiece unless he suffers, disguises himself as a hobo and embarks on a journey to "know trouble" firsthand. When all he finds is a train ride back to Hollywood and a lovely blonde companion, he redoubles his efforts, only to find himself in more trouble than he bargained for when he loses his memory and becomes a prisoner on a chain gang.
