During the Japanese invasion of Korea from 1592 to1598, the famous Joseon admiral Yi Sun-sin destroyed 133 Japanese warships at the Battle of Myeongryang in1597, leaving him in charge of only 13 ships. The battle, which took place in the Myeongryang Strait off the southwest coast of the Korean Peninsula, is seen as one of Yi's most important victories.
