Cable has been betrayed and left without water in the desert. When Hogue discovers a spring, he is saved. It is in an ideal location for a much-needed rest stop on the local stagecoach line, which Hogue takes advantage of. He builds a house and earns money from the stagecoach travellers who pass through his neighborhood.. Eventually, Hildy, a prostitute from the nearby town, joins him at the apartment. When the automobile replaces the stagecoach, Hogue has everything working in his favor until that era is brought to an end.
