Surveillance expert Harry Caul is hired to follow a young couple by an unknown client's harsh sidekick. Caul and his assistant Stan manage to record a confusing chat between the two while following them around San Francisco's Union Square. Caul becomes obsessed with the resulting recording, attempting to ascertain if the pair is in danger, tormented by recollections of a prior case that ended horribly.
