Nearing the conclusion of World War II, Cologne looked quite different. The city is in ruins, everyone is terrified, and many people have died. An era of immense cruelty is upon us. A group of young people in Cologne, known as the Edelweiss Pirates, refuses to bow to the Nazi regime's demands. With the help of the Hitler Youth, these anti-war protesters scribble anti-war messages on walls. Both Karl and his younger brother, Peter, are members of the Edelweiss Pirates and the Hitler Youth. Otto, their older brother, was killed in combat in a bombing attack, leaving the two young men alone since their mother's death. Cilly, Otto's fiancée, is doing everything in her can to keep her family alive during the war. She appreciates Carl's efforts.
