Rabbi Avram arrives in Philadelphia from Poland on his way to San Francisco to become the new rabbi of a congregation. As an inexperienced and naïve traveller, he is duped into paying for the trip to the west by con guys, who then abandon him and his things along a deserted road. He is befriended by a stranger, Tommy, who is a bank robber, and the two embark on numerous adventures.
