During America's Civil War, Union spies steal engineer Johnnie Gray's beloved locomotive The General - with his lady love, Annabelle Lee, aboard an attached boxcar - and he must do everything in his power to both recover The General and rescue Annabelle. This silent comedy-action film flopped when it was first released in most of the world in 1927, but is now regarded as one of the great American motion pictures. The plot is based on actual historical events.
